AI Innovation in Fable 2

Published by projectego on July 7, 2007

Fable 2 Forum regular, Grim Reefa, was kind enough to point out an interesting article today which concerns innovation towards the AI in Fable 2.

In the article, Peter Molyneux explains - in great detail - just how enthusiastic he is towards the AI system in Fable 2 and just how big of a part the new inclusion of a dog companion will play as the events of Fable 2 unfold.

Here’s a small snippet concerning the new three standard rules that will be introduced into Fable 2 - taken from the article in question:

Molyneux first presented three design guidelines, which he considers similar to Asimov’s Laws of Robotics. The idea is that AI in games generally, and the dog in Fable 2 specifically, should be there for your entertainment. It sounds obvious, but having a set of laws makes it easier to achieve! A game character should:

1. Not aggravate the player.
2. Focus around the player.
3. Look after itself.

The dog does this by getting out of your way but still running around you, anticipating your movement and acting as a guide, also not barking too much…
